The Jackal and The Drum | Panchtantra stories

The story of a cunning jackal who tried to trick a leopard by pretending there was prey in a drum but ended up becoming the prey himself.

Once upon a time, in a lush jungle, there lived a cunning jackal named Gomaya who was on the lookout for his next meal. One day, he stumbled upon a battlefield and noticed a large drum lying under a tree. As the wind blew, the tree's tender branch struck the drum, producing a drumbeat sound that intrigued the hungry jackal.

Examining the drum carefully, Gomaya attempted to tear off the top to check if there was any animal hiding inside that would make a tasty meal. However, the drum's top was too tough to rip open.

Undeterred, the jackal devised a plan and started beating the drum with both front paws, causing the drumbeat sound to resonate throughout the jungle. The sound attracted a majestic leopard who approached the drum.

Gomaya quickly informed the leopard that there was an animal hiding inside the drum, and since he had sharp claws and strong teeth, he could easily tear off the top to catch his prey. The hungry leopard took the bait and hit the drum with his heavy paws, causing it to burst open.

Unfortunately, the drum was empty, and the leopard, angry and hungry, turned on the jackal, blaming him for the wasted time and vowing to kill and eat him.

In the end, the cunning jackal's plan backfired, and he became the prey instead of the predator, falling victim to the leopard's wrath.

Moral of the story: One should not become too boastful or arrogant, as it can lead to embarrassment or even disaster. The jackal's overconfidence in his abilities led to his humiliation, and he learned a valuable lesson about the dangers of excessive pride. It is important to be humble and modest, even if one possesses talents or skills, as it is a much more admirable trait.
