The Sage and the Mouse | Panchtantra stories

A mouse seeks the sage's help against predators and is transformed into larger animals. But his greed for power leads to a lesson on contentment.

The Sage and the Mouse Story

Once upon a time, there was a wise sage who lived in a dense forest. Animals from all around would gather around him to listen to his spiritual preachings. Among them was a small mouse who would also attend these gatherings.

One day, while the mouse was out collecting berries for the sage, a big cat attacked him from behind the bushes. Scared and trembling, the mouse ran to the sage for help. However, the cat followed him there and asked the sage for permission to take his prey. The sage used his divine powers to transform the mouse into a big cat, scaring the other cat away.

The mouse, now a big cat, started roaming the forest, meowing loudly and fighting other cats to take revenge on them. However, one day, a fox attacked the mouse, and he ran to the sage for help again. The sage transformed the mouse into a bigger fox, and the other fox ran away.

The mouse, now a big fox, started roaming the forest again, but his happiness was short-lived as a tiger attacked him. The sage transformed the mouse into a tiger, and he started behaving like a king, killing many animals unnecessarily.

However, the mouse began to worry about the divine powers of the sage and what would happen if the sage became angry with him and transformed him back into a mouse. So he went to the sage, pretending to be hungry, and requested permission to kill him to gain his powers. The sage saw through his evil plan and transformed the mouse back into his original form, teaching him a lesson.

Moral of the story: One should be content with what they have and not try to attain more than they deserve.
